Dumbbell Romanian deadlift

The Romanian deadlift uses a pair of dumbbells and keeps the load per unit so workouts stay comparable.

Execution

How to do it

  1. 01

Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs, knees slightly bent, back straight.

  2. 02

Push your hips back as you lower the dumbbells along your legs.

  3. 03

Stop when you feel tension in the back of your thighs, without rounding your back.

  4. 04

Stand back up by pushing your heels into the floor, dumbbells close to your body.

Common mistake

Rounding your back to go lower.

Two dumbbells rather than a barbell. Sources: ACE — Romanian Deadlift. These cues do not replace a professional if you have pain or are in rehabilitation.

The decision

When this movement makes sense

It loads the hip hinge directly with a two-sided configuration that is easy to follow in your history.

When this changes

A single dumbbell does not validate this version: the kickstand or the central kettlebell have a different structure and cost per side.
